Cleaning addresses deposits in the chimney. An inspection evaluates its condition. If you are comparing chimney sweep services, ask whether the estimate covers cleaning alone, an inspection, or both. A low headline price is difficult to compare without that distinction.

Before you arrange a chimney sweep
Gather any service records you have. Note the kind of fireplace or appliance, the fuel it uses, and how frequently it runs. If you have recently moved in, say whether the history is known or unavailable. You do not need to diagnose a problem before asking about a visit.
- When was the last cleaning or inspection?
- Have you noticed an odor, a change in how the fireplace behaves, or debris?
- Has the fireplace, appliance, or chimney been altered?
- Are there access restrictions at the property?
What to clarify in a cleaning estimate
Ask which parts of the system are included, how the work area will be protected, and what documentation you will receive. Confirm whether any inspection is included and how additional findings will be handled. Repairs should be described separately so that you can understand the proposed work before deciding.

Is chimney sweeping the same as chimney cleaning?
The terms are often used interchangeably. What matters is the written scope: which parts will be cleaned, whether an inspection is included, and what is excluded.
Can a cleaning fix damaged brickwork?
Cleaning and masonry repairs are separate kinds of work. Describe visible damage when you make your request so it can be assessed and any repair scope discussed separately.
